Dr. B G Avati
Dr. B. G. Avati — The Eternal Torchbearer of Karnataka’s Art Destiny
President, KIAVCT | Master Educator | Cultural Reformer | Architect of Art Movements
Born on 8 July 1965 in the culturally vibrant region of Vijayapura, Dr. Bheemaraya Gurappa Avati stands today as one of Karnataka’s most influential artist-educators — a man whose life feels written not in ink but in pigment, purpose, and profound service. His rise from rural classrooms to becoming the President of KIAVCT is not just a personal journey; it is a chapter in the artistic evolution of Karnataka itself.
A Life Shaped by Art, Purpose & the Spirit of Service
From childhood, Dr. Avati absorbed not only the colours of the world around him but also the deeper calling of art’s power to transform society. His education across local government schools, his MFA from Ilkal, and his early years as a voluntary teacher forged him into a man who does not separate art from life — for him, art is life, and life itself is a canvas awaiting meaning.
He began his career not with privilege, but with service — teaching painting for free, guiding rural youth, and cultivating creativity without asking anything in return. Those foundational years became the bedrock of everything he would build later: institutions, reforms, training centers, councils, and a statewide movement for the dignity of art teachers.
The Educator Who Became a Movement
Over the next four decades, Dr. Avati transformed from a single art teacher into a powerful collective voice representing thousands. Through innovation, relentless advocacy, and deep community wisdom, he led reforms that reshaped the very structure of Karnataka’s art education.
His contributions include:
- Establishing the Drawing Master Course (DMC) — a historic milestone
- Securing salary scales & seniority protections for art teachers
- Helping implement time-bound service rules
- Leading reform of divisional art examinations
- Bringing Karnataka’s art schools under university recognition
- Building large-scale state art teachers’ conferences
- Leading district, state, and cultural associations simultaneously
- Creating the “Madhure Dasoha” Art Textbook (2016)
- Organizing art camps across government schools
- Securing grants for art development programs
- Training youth, women, and unemployed communities through art
These actions were not mere achievements — they were transformations that uplifted thousands of teachers, students, and institutions.
The Artist Whose Canvas Extends Beyond Paint
Dr. Avati’s creativity flows into every medium it touches. As a painter, educator, theatre practitioner, and filmmaker, he builds bridges between creativity and public life.
His artistic journey includes:
🎨 Painting exhibitions, cultural showcases & state-level art events
🎬 Documentary filmmaking, including “Art in School Education” (2018)
🎭 Direction & performance in theatre across seven years
📺 Acting in acclaimed Kannada TV serials
📚 Editorial leadership in “Kala Sampada” and Art Teachers’ journals
🌾 Rural arts development & cultural awareness programs
He is the rare artist whose work moves across classroom, stage, camera, community, and policy — all with equal passion and mastery.
